Renishaw's Machine Tool Product (MTP) division are recruiting a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to work within new product development at our global HQ in South Gloucestershire.

This position will be part of a multi-disciplinary team creating the next generation of Renishaw products for use of on machine tools. You will be accountable for developing real time embedded software used within systems and be given the opportunity to improve your embedded system and software testing skills plus much more within the metrology engineering domain.

Responsibilities

  • Working as part of the MTP Division’s new products development team

  • Developing new embedded software, maintaining software in existing products and developing for associated production equipment

  • Taking part in design discussions with various electronic and mechanical hardware design teams

  • Liaising with the Division’s marketing, subsidiaries and applications departments regarding the product’s behaviour and any issues raised

  • Writing design documentation of a high standard

  • Specifying, performing and documenting software testing

  • Peer reviewing of code and documentation produced by the division’s engineers 

Key requirements

  • Experience in real time embedded system design and implementation

  • Working knowledge of ARM microcontrollers

  • Practice in writing software using the C programming language and assembler

  • Demonstrable understanding of electronics 

  • The ability to estimate development timescales and produce high quality design documentation 

Desirable requirements

  • Familiarity with design methodologies such as UML or Yourdon

  • Some experience of industrial coding standards and development guidelines e.g. MISRA, DO-178B/C

  • Experience with FPGAs working in VHDL

  • Experience of real time operating systems

  • Awareness of software testing methods such as unit testing, integration testing etc.

  • Experience of Configuration Management systems for managing software changes such as PVCS, Bugzilla, TFS, JIRA etc.

  • Experience in developing low power battery operated systems

  • Experience of Nios II soft core processors and Qsys tool chain

  • Python scripting

  • Experience of GIT version control

  • Experience of Quartus II tools

Person specification

The successful applicant will be a clear thinker who enjoys creating well thought out software designs, documenting them, and then implementing them in clearly readable code. The individual in this role must have a strong attention to detail with good verbal and written communication skills.
