Role & Department

Canon EMEA is looking for a Senior VAT Specialist to provide specialist support for the EMEA VAT function, to ensure EMEA VAT compliance in system setups within our Finance department. In this role focuses on the maintenance of Tax control framework, management of VAT tax issues and effective VAT tax planning.
What we give

As a Senior VAT Specialist you will be responsible for: 

Legally compliant business and systems setup:

  • Supports the VAT Manager ensuring VAT compliant business and systems setups for all legal entities in the EMEA region through the tax control framework; including the 52 VAT registrations in 25 countries in the EMEA region.
  • VAT reporting (submitting VAT returns) is not a regular activity for this role.
  • Support with JSOX and audit compliance for all VAT tax processes and issues.

Management of tax issues

  • Effective management of VAT issues throughout EMEA with early identification, documentation, risk mitigation, reporting and appropriate escalation. Depending on the complexity this can be executed independently.
  • Co-design and execute (or independently design and execute) the policy/strategy for resolving VAT tax issues.
  • Prepare accurate and timely responses to VAT enquiries and Tax/Revenue Audits. Depending on the complexity this can be executed independently.
  • Maintain relationships with external VAT advisors, tax authorities and service providers.

Tax Planning and advice 

  • Co-determine (or independently determine) effective VAT tax planning for EMEA business models, structure and operation to ensure that VAT compliance is maintained in line with Canon Inc tax strategy and appropriate steps taken to mitigate risk.
  • Provide advice and active support to the EMEA business units to optimize the business models to support the achievement of their objectives. Advise business units on VAT consequences of any new proposed transactions.
     

VAT automation 

  • Obtain a good understanding of the relevant setups of the IT systems used by Canon with respect to VAT. 
  • Provide support with the further implementation, review and improvement of tools, controls and best practices to support the further transition the future of VAT technology like digital tax / transactional reporting.
  • Participate in (IT) projects to implement new business flows into Canon’s IT systems and tax engine by providing requirements and testing.

What we ask

For this role you will have:

  • University degree in Tax law
  • Excellent/in-depth technical knowledge of VAT across EMEA region.
  • 3-5 years working Experience in VAT environment (practice and/or commercial).
  • Ability to make strategic plans for the VAT functions using best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues.
  • Ability to use own initiative and manage workload to deadlines.
  • Analytical skills with good attention to detail.
  • Ability to work cross functionally across the business/countries and adapt to changing circumstances whereby he/she acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience inside or outside the central Tax Department.
  • Ability to solve complex problems; taking new perspectives using existing solutions.
  • Works independently; receives limited guidance.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills. He/she may direct the work of others in the company.
  • Knowledge in IT/VAT automation has a preference, but is not required but should be developed (further) as part of this role.
