We are looking for a Consultant Psychiatrist to cover the Waverley locality of the Guildford & Waverley Community Mental Health Team for Older People (CMHT-OP).  It is an exciting opportunity to join a well-established & high functioning team. The post-holder will be responsible for consultant oversight of patients aged 65 and over referred to the CMHT for OP & registered with the surgeries in the Waverley locality. The 65+ population is currently around 16,430.

Main duties of the job

For this role, it is expected that the post-holder will conduct three clinics per week as well as sessions for home visits as needed, & support nurse colleagues with caseload reviews, & participate in the weekly MDT. The CMHT-OP currently performs the function of a general older adult CMHT as well as that of a memory assessment service. Functional and organic cases are accepted.

Duties as an Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act will occasionally be required.  The role includes 2.5PA allocated to SPA, and the post-holder will be encouraged to access the local academic programme on Friday mornings. The Trust supports consultants who wish to develop interests in Education, Medical Management and Research.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent recognised medical qualification.
  • Approval under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act(or within 6 to 12 months of the time of interview/assessment) or equivalent.
  • Full medical registration with a license to practice.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent.
  • Relevant higher degree, e.g. MD, PhD, MSc or other additional clinical qualifications
  • Management qualification or evidence of an interest in developing leadership skills.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
Desirable criteria
  • • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within three months of appointment

Clincical Skills, Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of legislation, Department of Health Guidance and literature and its implications for clinical practice
  • Knowledge of NHS strategic vision in the Next Stage Review (High-Quality Care for All)
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Knowledge of psychiatric provision
  • Experience working with various patient groups presenting with the full range of clinical severity across different care settings, including community, inpatient, and specialist teams.
Desirable criteria
  • Peer review or research publications
  • Specific training qualification/certificate or attendance on a recognised teaching course.
  • Published audit or research projects

Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning

Essential criteria
  • Ability to take a clinical leadership role in a multidisciplinary team, ensuring high-quality care.
  • Skills and sensitivity in negotiating with patients, relatives, and other professionals where opinions differ.
  • A high-level ability to effectively communicate complex and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families, carers, and a wide range of lay and professional people within and outside the NHS at both written and oral levels.
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post
