Job Description

Renishaw's Additive Manufacturing Product Division focuses on the development and production of additive manufacturing (AM) systems and solutions. Additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, is a revolutionary manufacturing process that creates objects layer by layer using digital design data. There is an opportunity for a Lead Electronics Design Engineer to join the Optical, Software, Electronics, Electrical Controls & Instrumentation systems team within AM, based at our headquarters in Wotton-under-Edge.

You’ll have a primary focus on the design and support of existing and next generation electronics for Additive Manufacturing machines with a focus on performance, robustness, in-field-maintenance, and scalability. You’ll bring your extensive knowledge of electronics hardware design, validation and troubleshooting into these complex electro-mechanical and electro-optical systems at Renishaw.

Responsibilities

  • Development of electronics hardware, including schematic capture and PCB design, particularly relating to analogue, digital communication, industrial I/O, power, motor control and signal processing.

  • Development of microcontroller firmware, explicitly using the STM32 Arm-Cortex series.

  • Perform low-level troubleshooting and diagnosis.

  • Collaborating with the embedded software, electrical design, and mechanical hardware design teams.

  • Capturing, analysing, and documenting critical technical design requirements, producing test documents, and developing prototypes for test.

  • Implementing on-machine hardware and software to enable greater levels of diagnostics to improve self-sufficiency for both the field service engineers and end-users.

Key requirements

  • Technical engineering background, preferably with experience in the design of complex electro-opto-mechanical machines. A degree in a technical discipline (mechanical, electrical or machine automation) would be desirable.

  • Demonstrable design, simulation and verification experience and delivery in circuit schematic capture and PCB layout.

  • Highly conversant in implementing advanced microcontrollers and delivery of firmware in C.

  • An aptitude for problem solving.

  • Solid communicator, able to convey complex ideas with ease.

Desirable requirements

  • Experience in electronic simulation with tools such as LTSpice.

  • Experience with Zuken for electronic circuit design.

  • Applied working experience in high bandwidth opto-electronics.

  • Knowledge of industrial communications protocols such as EtherCAT and IO-Link

Person specification

In this role, you’ll think like a conceptual engineer, with a high attention to detail. You’ll be someone who takes a methodical and systematic approach to problem solving, collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team. You’ll thrive on delivering results, being able to demonstrate clear success in delivering to plan in the past.
