The School of Engineering and Built Environment at the University of Derby is a dynamic and future-focused academic community that blends technical excellence with creative innovation. It offers a wide range of programmes across engineering, architecture, construction, and design, preparing students to tackle global challenges in sustainability, infrastructure, and the built environment.
The School is home to research-active academics with backgrounds in architecture, interior design, and construction. Our staff bring real-world experience and academic rigour to the classroom, supporting students in developing both creative portfolios and technical competencies.
The discipline area is located in the University’s STEM annex in Markeaton Street, where staff offices and lab facilities are co-located. Key investments in the last few years include dedicated intelligent instrumentation and smart sensor technologies, robotics, renewable energy, power engineering and advanced materials and manufacturing. The discipline area is actively engaged in knowledge exchange projects and has an active applied research agenda.
About the Role
Engineering at Derby is driving forward an ambitious vision to create an exceptional learning environment, expand our research excellence, and strengthen industry collaboration across the region and beyond. As part of this strategic growth, we seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable individual to join our team as a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. Along with your research work, this role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the growth and success of our Electrical and Electronic Engineering programmes. You will need to engage with employers on your teaching to ensure it is aligned with the sector expectations. You will also be encouraged to work with Industry to build on existing research capabilities for the area.
The typical teaching timetable runs 09:00 – 17:00, with some evenings and weekend, work with most of the scheduled teaching currently at Markeaton Street campus.
In addition, you will play an instrumental role in delivering parts of our curriculum (in English) at our partner sites in China as a ‘flying faculty’, and will therefore be required to spend a proportion of the academic year based overseas (1-2 months). The role comes with the opportunity to help develop our collaboration and wider relationship.

About You
We are seeking an exceptional candidate with expertise in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. You will hold a good honours degree in a relevant discipline and ideally a PhD (or be close to completion), or possess equivalent professional achievement such as published research. Fellowship of Advance HE is desirable, or you will be willing to work towards this recognition.
You will bring significant subject‑specific experience that enables the development of new knowledge and innovation within the electrical and electronic engineering field. We are particularly interested in expertise related to Power Electronics Applications, Industrial Electronics, and Sustainable Electrical Power Systems.
You will also bring knowledge or experience of higher education, with the ability to deliver teaching using a range of approaches that support and motivate students. You will be confident in communicating complex and conceptual ideas in a clear and accessible way to diverse groups, helping to create a positive learning environment in which all students can engage and succeed. Through your teaching and subject expertise, you will contribute to an enriching academic experience that connects theory with practical application and supports student development.

This role is eligible for sponsorship by the University, however, your individual circumstances must meet the criteria set out by UKVI; this includes meeting the English Language requirement and earning a salary that meets the highest of either the going rate for the SOC code or the minimum salary threshold for the Skilled Worker route (£41,700 per annum, as of 22nd July 2025).
