Senior Lecturer/Reader in Applied Artificial Intelligence for Better Health & Care (Education & Research) – Strand, London, WC2R 2LS
About Us
King’s College London is a leading University with nine Faculties. As part of King’s Health Partners, we have an excellent environment for health & care innovation and a strong focus on mentoring and career development. King’s hosts two key entities central to this role: the Institute for Artificial Intelligence, which brings together interdisciplinary expertise to advance cutting-edge AI research and education while addressing societal and ethical implications; and the Better Health & Care Hub, driving transformative approaches to care through frugal innovation, strengthening the careforce, and engaging communities.
The 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) placed King’s applied and allied health research 1st for: overall proportion of research rated 4* (world-leading, the best mark possible), research papers rated 4*, impact rated 4*, environment rated 4*(joint), Grade Point Average and Power. REF2021 rated as world-leading: 100% of our environment, 86% of our impact and 70% of our research overall. Over 95% of our research overall was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent. REF2021 assessed 98% of King’s research in Computer Science and Informatics as world-leading or internationally excellent, highlighting the university’s strength in this field.
As of 2025, King’s is ranked number 1 in the world for Nursing (QS world rankings). King’s produces more highly cited research outputs (top 1% citations) on palliative care than any other centre internationally (SciVal), and is second in the world on the same metric for nursing and midwifery. King’s is the largest provider of health care education in Europe.
The Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC) (<250 staff, ~3000 students) is based in the heart of central and south London. It includes the Cicely Saunders Institute for Palliative Care, Policy & Rehabilitation, the premier Institute for Palliative Care, bringing together clinical, research and education teams. Our applied clinical and health multidisciplinary research develops and transforms therapies, the health & care experience and outcomes – including leveraging AI, digital innovation, and data-driven approaches for patients and those important to them, wherever they are cared for. Our award-winning NMPC education programmes span pre-registration nursing and midwifery, and multidisciplinary post-graduate taught and research programmes – with a newly emerging programme planned on digital health & care.
We are committed to staff development, and offer opportunities to identify and access appropriate training and professional growth.
About the role
King’s Better Health & Care Hub (BH&CH) is a dynamic world-leading, cross faculty initiative to develop research and education dedicated to supporting the transformation of health and care, in partnership, on a local, national and international scale. BH&CH aims to support research and education which radically redesign interventions, systems, and pathways to address the most pressing challenges faced by people living with complex illnesses, and the healthcare systems that support them.
Led by the Florence Nightingale Faculty of Nursing, Midwifery & Palliative Care (NMPC), in collaboration with the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy (SSPP) and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), our initiative harnesses interdisciplinary expertise from across King’s College London, bolstered by strategic partnerships with NHS, social care, community, patient-led, charitable and international organisations.
Applications are invited for a Senior Lecturer/Reader in Applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) to join the Better Health & Care Hub. This is a unique opportunity to lead ambitious, interdisciplinary research and education at the interface of AI, digital health, and applied clinical science, contributing directly to BH&CH’s mission to transform care for people with complex health and social needs.
The successful candidate will be based in the Digital Health & Applied Technology Assessment Research Division within NMPC, as well as in the Hub, developing and delivering collaborative, internationally-leading research and education in applied AI, to further the aims of BH&CH. We welcome applications from clinical and non-clinical academics with expertise related to applied AI for health, care, service innovation, or related fields.
This role offers the opportunity to:
- Develop and drive high-impact externally funded research that leverages AI and digital innovation to improve patient care, outcomes, and experiences.
- Lead the development and delivery of the new postgraduate education and awards in Digital Health and AI, alongside contributions to pre-registration and other postgraduate teaching and PhD supervision.
- Build and lead interdisciplinary collaborations locally and internationally, influencing the future of AI in health and care.
- Shape BH&CH’s strategic priorities, contributing to its Careforce, Frugal Innovation, and Communities themes, leadership and capacity building.
We are seeking a candidate with a strong track record in applied AI research and education, demonstrated interdisciplinary engagement, and the ambition and leadership to align with and advance BH&CH’s and the Faculty’s mission. You will join two Readers in the Hub, alongside interdisciplinary teams and post-doctoral fellows. You will develop AI driven solutions for people affected by multiple long-term conditions or comorbidities, complex care needs, advanced illness, or requiring palliative care. You will deliver approaches that are equitable, scalable, and transformative, advancing health and care delivery at the forefront of AI and digital innovation.
This is a full-time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.
Location: Hybrid – minimum of 2 days per week on Waterloo campus
