Internal Vacancy:  Temporary Vacancy Crew Commander On Call at Potton

A temporary Crew Commander vacancy on the Retained Duty System has arisen at Potton station.

Personnel must be capable of meeting the response time and availability requirements of the Station and post (living or working within 6 minutes of Potton, Sandy or Biggleswade On Call Fire Station), and expressions of interest are invited from:

  • Firefighters on temporary promotion (Whole Time or Retained Duty System) who are in the Crew Commander Talent Pool
  • Firefighters on temporary promotion (Whole Time or Retained Duty System), who are in the Crew Commander Temporary Pool – having completed the promotion gateway
  • Competent Firefighters (Whole Time or Retained Duty System) holding a valid Incident Command Level 1 Initial.

Consideration will also be given to Firefighters currently in the talent pool/temporary pool or holding ICL1 and able to satisfy the criteria above, to undertake the rolefrom their current base to support Potton station, and fulfil the Crew Commander management responsibilities for Potton station.  This will include line management responsibilities for On Call firefighters at Potton station, reporting directly to the On Call Watch Commander at Potton station.  Should the successful applicant be based from Sandy or Biggleswade On Call station, appointment will be offered on a six month temporary trial, and will be subject to review.

Candidates who have a live disciplinary sanction for either Attendance or Conduct at the time of application closing date will not normally be eligible to engage in the selection process.  Candidates pending the outcome of a disciplinary matter will not normally be eligible for appointment until the outcome is known.  (Exceptions may be made in instances where extenuating circumstances apply).

Personnel looking to undertake the role above on promotion will need to complete a Crew Commander promotion gateway process, and enter the CC talent pool to be eligible for any substantive appointment in post.   (Individuals will be encouraged to undertake the next CM gateway process, or complete any outstanding elements at the next available opportunity).

Expressions of interest should be submitted via the Internal Vacancies section on ITRENT which can be accessed via ESS . Applicants should outline within the personal statement how they meet the following core safety critical areas:

  1. Operational Command and responsibilities
  2. Health & Safety Awareness
  3. Leadership qualities

Applicants will be required to attend a selection process involving a short interview.  The interview will assess candidate’s ability to perform the roles and responsibilities of the On Call Crew Commander post within Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.  It will be based on the job description and person specification, and may include strengths based style questions based on the NFCC Leadership Framework/Professional Behaviours.

Selection will be based upon the outcome from this interview.  Where there is a single applicant at transfer or on promotion from the talent or temporary pool, a professional discussion will take place.
